The Story of the Work
What lurks below the depths of The Purple Loch? Beneath a brooding canopy of indigo and violet, a hidden reef comes alive with darting forms and sudden flashes of color. Brilliant fish and aquatic creatures emerge from the purple depths in vivid oranges, golds, and electric blues, each rendered with the gestural confidence of an artist painting from memory and imagination. The matte surface absorbs light rather than reflecting it, deepening the sense of submersion—of peering into water that reveals its secrets only to those who look long enough. The warm interior glows in striking contrast, a reminder that even the darkest depths hold the promise of light.
This work belongs to the JeanElton DiskVase (DV) Collection, distinguished by its broad, disc-like profile and dramatically sculpted rim. The expansive surface area of the DiskVase form transforms the exterior into a panoramic underwater tableau, while the undulating lip of the vessel evokes the irregular edge of a tidal pool, reinforcing the aquatic theme with structural poetry.
With a height of 17 to 18 inches and a width of 20 inches, this piece brings a moody, immersive presence to spaces that welcome drama and depth—a designer's study, an intimate dining room, or the focal wall of a curated gallery.
The work is fired first to approximately 1800 degrees F, after which any remaining fine alterations are made, and the surface treatment is applied by hand by the artist. A second firing to about 2100 degrees F completes the process, ensuring its durability and artistic integrity.
This piece bears the JeanElton signature on its underside and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity (COA), both of which display its catalogue reference.
