The Story of the Work
An architecture of stillness and surprise: Listening Wall is a contemplative piece in the JeanElton OvalVase (OV) Collection. Sculptural in presence and elemental in form, this matte-surfaced work draws the eye with its quiet verticality and the irregular rhythm of four portals—each a small revelation offering a glimpse into the vessel’s interior world.
The surface is rendered in a deep, burnished red matte finish, evoking the sense of clay shaped by earth and time. Subtle curves soften the otherwise strong silhouette, while the hand-carved circular openings introduce both contrast and curiosity. These portals function as both visual punctuation and intentional design breaks, encouraging viewers to peer into the shadowed interior and discover the hidden depth of its form.
The work is fired first to approximately 1800 degrees F, after which any remaining fine alterations are made, and the surface treatment is applied by hand by the artist. A second firing to about 2100 degrees F completes the process, ensuring its durability and artistic integrity.
This piece bears the JeanElton signature on its underside and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity (COA), both of which display its catalogue reference.
