The Story of the Work
Calder Mobile Tribute inaugurates the studio's celebrated series of homages to Alexander Calder, translating the master sculptor's iconic visual language into ceramic form. Bold geometric shapes—concentric circles, sweeping arcs, angular planes—are rendered in saturated primary colors against a clean cream ground, capturing the playful equilibrium that defined Calder's suspended sculptures. Each element appears to float independently on the vessel's surface while maintaining the precise visual balance that was Calder's signature achievement, creating a composition that feels both spontaneous and meticulously orchestrated.
This work belongs to the JeanElton OvalVase Collection, distinguished by its elliptical footprint and the gentle warping that creates asymmetrical curves when viewed from different angles. As the inaugural piece in the Calder tribute series, this vessel establishes the visual vocabulary—primary colors, geometric boldness, airy spatial composition—that subsequent iterations explore and expand upon.
The work is fired first to approximately 1800 degrees F, after which any remaining fine alterations are made, and the surface treatment is applied by hand by the artist. A second firing to about 2100 degrees F completes the process, ensuring its durability and artistic integrity.
This piece bears the JeanElton signature on its underside and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity (COA), both of which display its catalogue reference.
