Calder Mobile Tribute II offers a spirited dialogue with Alexander Calder's artistic legacy, translating the master's language of suspended form into a vibrant ceramic surface. Large angular shapes in decisive black anchor the composition, while circles and arcs in saturated primaries orbit around them like the counterweights of a perfectly balanced mobile. The interplay of scale—sweeping dark masses against smaller bursts of red, blue, and yellow—generates a sense of visual momentum, as though the design might rotate on an invisible axis at any moment.
This work belongs to the JeanElton OvalVase Collection, distinguished by its elliptical cross-section that creates an elegant, softened silhouette. The form's moderate height provides an ideal canvas for the bold graphic language, with the elliptical curvature adding depth and dimension to the flat geometric shapes as they wrap around the vessel's contours.
The work is fired first to approximately 1800 degrees F, after which any remaining fine alterations are made, and the surface treatment is applied by hand by the artist. A second firing to about 2100 degrees F completes the process, ensuring its durability and artistic integrity.
