The Story of the Work
Sunset Study is a compact meditation in the JeanElton OvalVase (OV) Collection, drawing the eye inward — closer — inviting contemplation through intimacy of scale.
The surface blooms with a riot of dusky color: burnt orange, violet, indigo, crimson, and deep moss swirl like the final minutes of a spectacular sunset. Matte throughout, the finish softens the drama with a painterly quiet. The top rim is rendered in a glowing coral that echoes the warmest notes in the exterior, offering a simple contrast that adds to the composition's visual harmony.
Its small stature intensifies its impact. The proportions ground the viewer, pulling the horizon line low and wide along the vessel's elliptical curve, as if the vastness of a sky at dusk has been distilled into a singular, approachable form. This is a vessel that surrounds, steadies, and glows.
The work is fired first to approximately 1800 degrees F, after which any remaining fine alterations are made, and the surface treatment is applied by hand by the artist. A second firing to about 2100 degrees F completes the process, ensuring its durability and artistic integrity.
This piece bears the JeanElton signature on its underside and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity (COA), both of which display its catalogue reference.
