The Story of the Work
Taupe Thicket wraps the vessel in an intricate web of dark linear brushwork over a warm taupe ground, creating a dense, all-over composition that evokes the tangled complexity of untended undergrowth. Stems, branches, and thorny tendrils interweave across every surface in a composition that is simultaneously decorative and slightly menacing—beautiful in its graphic complexity yet conveying the real difficulty of navigating overgrown terrain. The restricted palette of dark marks on the warm, muted ground focuses all attention on the drawing itself, where every line contributes to the sense of a thicket growing ever more impenetrable, each new tendril crossing and recrossing the paths laid down by others.
This work belongs to the JeanElton OvalVase Collection, distinguished by its elliptical footprint and the gentle warping that creates asymmetrical curves when viewed from different angles. The generous depth of this piece adds dimensionality to the thicket imagery, with the linear pattern wrapping around the form's curvature to create the sensation of being surrounded by undergrowth rather than merely observing it.
The work is fired first to approximately 1800 degrees F, after which any remaining fine alterations are made, and the surface treatment is applied by hand by the artist. A second firing to about 2100 degrees F completes the process, ensuring its durability and artistic integrity.
This piece bears the JeanElton signature on its underside and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity (COA), both of which display its catalogue reference.
