The Story of the Work
The inverted sail that launched a legacy: Sailing is a defining work in the JeanElton portfolio of ceramic Collections, and the original namesake of the iconic SailVase (SV) Collection. Created in 2014, this piece introduced not only a new form but a new philosophy—one that embraced elegance in asymmetry, balance through contradiction, and movement within stillness. The profile evokes the taut curve of a sail—but inverted, inviting the viewer to question convention and find beauty in surprise.
The exterior and interior are both finished in a deep, glossy black that catches and reflects the light with mirror-like depth. At the heart of the piece, a rich plume of crimson rises through the darkness, forming a painterly gesture that is both fluid and mysterious. Up close, a fine network of crystalline patterning shimmers just beneath the surface, adding layers of texture and intrigue to the visual field.
The work is fired first to approximately 1800 degrees F, after which any remaining fine alterations are made, and the surface treatment is applied by hand by the artist. A second firing to about 2100 degrees F completes the process, ensuring its durability and artistic integrity.
This piece bears the JeanElton signature on its underside and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity (COA), both of which display its catalogue reference.
