Tiger Lillies II

Tiger Lillies is a vivid, intimate work in the JeanElton SailVase (SV) Collection, where fiery orange blossoms erupt against a deep black ground with an almost defiant vitality. Each petal is rendered with deliberate brushwork — curling, reaching, glowing — as though the flowers themselves refuse to yield to the darkness surrounding them. Rich green stems and leaves arc through the composition, anchoring the blooms while reinforcing the sense of upward growth and tenacity.

The compact sail form concentrates the drama of the surface treatment into a jewel-like presence. At this scale, the interplay between the dark matte background and the luminous floral elements feels especially concentrated, rewarding close viewing with layers of detail — fine linework, tonal shifts within each petal, and the subtle tension between botanical precision and artistic freedom.

The work is fired first to approximately 1800 degrees F, after which any remaining fine alterations are made, and the surface treatment is applied by hand by the artist. A second firing to about 2100 degrees F completes the process, ensuring its durability and artistic integrity.
