The Story of the Work
A sail awash in the final blaze of day: Jibsail is a radiant member of the JeanElton SailVase (SV) Collection, evoking the fleeting brilliance of a sunlit horizon reflected on open water. Its shape, like a taut sail catching an evening breeze, hints at motion and possibility—yet it stands still, inviting contemplation rather than voyage.
The surface treatment is a sweeping spectacle of color: fiery oranges and molten reds dissolve into golden yellows, merging seamlessly into the cool crescendo of indigos and violets. These painterly streaks unfurl across a matte black exterior, suggesting the mirrored image of a vivid sky against darkened waves. The irregular bottom of the vase adds to the illusion of the wind’s unseen hand, while the interior, also matte black, reinforces the sense of depth and mystery.
The work is fired first to approximately 1800 degrees F, after which any remaining fine alterations are made, and the surface treatment is applied by hand by the artist. A second firing to about 2100 degrees F completes the process, ensuring its durability and artistic integrity.
This piece bears the JeanElton signature on its underside and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity (COA), both of which display its catalogue reference.
