The Story of the Work
Evening Sail is a striking work in the JeanElton SailVase (SV) Collection, capturing the moment when motion and hue converge—when the day’s last breeze stirs the water and the sky ignites in saturated color. With its pronounced lean and narrow base, the form itself suggests a vessel mid-tack, catching wind and carving forward.
The surface is alive with chromatic movement. Crimson and sapphire, ochre and emerald—each hue seems poured by a shifting sky or splashed up from the sea. An expressive swirl of painterly motion arcs across one side, evoking sails full of air and the exhilaration of movement at dusk. Against the clean, pale matte background, the energy of the surface design feels even more vivid and uncontained.
Inside, a soft matte teal finish offers a moment of repose—quiet water to balance the storm of color outside. The tilted rim heightens the sense of directional pull, as if the piece itself is sailing out of stillness toward some beckoning horizon.
The work is fired first to approximately 1800 degrees F, after which any remaining fine alterations are made, and the surface treatment is applied by hand by the artist. A second firing to about 2100 degrees F completes the process, ensuring its durability and artistic integrity.
This piece bears the JeanElton signature on its underside and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity (COA), both of which display its catalogue reference.
