The Story of the Work
This JeanElton SailVase presents a striking visual parade—rows of vivid patterning in turquoise, lemon yellow, crimson, and tangerine march diagonally across its surface with a rhythm both structured and spontaneous. The bands vary in width and detail, forming intricate motifs that echo woven textiles, beadwork, and festive regalia. Crowning the composition is a sculpted rim that dips and rises in fluid motion, its bold red finish unifying the design with a celebratory flourish.
The patterns were applied entirely by hand, layer by layer, using masking and resist techniques to achieve the vibrant clarity of each color and shape. The result is a surface that invites close inspection and rewards it with endless variation and subtle charm.
The work is fired first to approximately 1800 degrees F, after which any remaining fine alterations are made, and the surface treatment is applied by hand by the artist. A second firing to about 2100 degrees F completes the process, ensuring its durability and artistic integrity.
This piece bears the JeanElton signature on its underside and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity (COA), both of which display its catalogue reference.
