The Story of the Work
This JeanElton SailVase appears to have been wrapped mid-motion, its colorful band cascading diagonally across the black matte form like a sarong swept up in wind. The asymmetric composition suggests movement and balance—two core elements in the JeanElton design language. The form’s graceful sweep rises and falls with an architectural rhythm, perfectly framing the vivid “fabric” of patterned dots, stripes, and geometric flashes.
The wraparound design is achieved through a technique known as slip trailing. Here, liquid clay is applied through a mesh to create a dimensional grid, giving each colored element its own subtle raised edge and textural individuality. The result is both visual and tactile: a woven illusion formed from clay and glaze rather than thread and dye. Each color field is defined with delicate contouring, inviting closer inspection and touch.
The work is fired first to approximately 1800 degrees F, after which any remaining fine alterations are made, and the surface treatment is applied by hand by the artist. A second firing to about 2100 degrees F completes the process, ensuring its durability and artistic integrity.
This piece bears the JeanElton signature on its underside and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity (COA), both of which display its catalogue reference.
