The Story of the Work
Contours of Quiet draws the eye along a billowing curve, its sculpted profile swelling and receding like a sail catching unseen wind. The warm ivory exterior carries the soft luminosity of unbroken snow, while the undulating rim — traced in burnished bronze — opens to reveal a darkened interior, mysterious and contemplative. There is a whispered tension here between presence and absence, between the solid and the void, with the metallic edge serving as a threshold where one becomes the other.
This work belongs to the JeanElton SailVase collection, where the lift of a wind-filled sail and sculptural shaping converge. The undulating cut rim follows an irregular, almost windswept rhythm, dipping and lifting along the crest of the form. The form leans subtly, its profile drawn taut between strength and grace, while the bronze-lined opening traces a quiet drama along the upper edge — a meeting of restraint and revelation.
The work is fired first to approximately 1800 degrees F, after which any remaining fine alterations are made, and the surface treatment is applied by hand by the artist. A second firing to about 2100 degrees F completes the process, ensuring its durability and artistic integrity.
This piece bears the JeanElton signature on its underside and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity (COA), both of which display its catalogue reference.
