20000 Leagues descends into a world of vivid aquatic imagination — a surface dense with circular forms, checkered patterns, and organic shapes that suggest sea creatures, coral formations, and the strange geometry of deep-water life. The colors are warm and saturated despite the underwater reference: bold oranges, reds, and golds dominate, lit from within against darker ground tones that evoke depth and pressure. The composition feels populated, as if the surface teems with life just beyond the threshold of recognition. The interior carries a cool, clear tone that completes the sense of submersion.

This piece is part of the Prism_Underwater collection, featuring Jean Elton's hand-painted surface technique in which individual brushstrokes of color are applied directly to the ceramic surface. Layered applications build depth and luminosity, each stroke adding translucent intensity to the composition. The result is a surface that appears to glow from within — color not sitting on the clay but emanating from it.

The work is fired first to approximately 1800 degrees F, after which any remaining fine alterations are made, and the surface treatment is applied by hand by the artist. A second firing to about 2100 degrees F completes the process, ensuring its durability and artistic integrity.
