Haiku IX

A study in balance and restraint, Haiku is part of the JeanElton portfolio of ceramic TallVases, where simplicity meets depth in a refined interplay of contrast and movement. The bold black surface, interrupted only by three fluid white lines, evokes the quiet precision of a well-crafted verse—each stroke intentional, each space deliberate.

The surface treatment is a meditation in form, where negative space is just as powerful as the painted elements. The matte black exterior and interior absorb light rather than reflect it, emphasizing the stark white ribbons that arc and intersect with effortless grace. The composition suggests motion yet remains serenely grounded, much like the poetic form it is named after—where meaning unfolds in a few elegant lines.

The work is fired first to approximately 1800 degrees F, after which any remaining fine alterations are made, and the surface treatment is applied by hand by the artist. A second firing to about 2100 degrees F completes the process, ensuring its durability and artistic integrity.

This piece bears the JeanElton signature on its underside and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity (COA), both of which display its catalogue reference.
