Ammonite Swirls
Ancient geometry, coiled in shadow
A Featured-scale TallVase finished in a Black & White Line & Form surface treatment, in a Black & Cream color palette. 11 inches tall, 11 inches wide, 9 inches deep, weighing 7 pounds, with a gloss interior and a gloss exterior. Line & Form pieces use deliberate linear marks — incisions, applied lines, or directional strokes — to define the visual structure of the piece.

The Story of the Work
The surface of Ammonite_Swirls disappears into its own intricacy — a dense, spiraling field of curves that draws the eye inward and inward again, like the fossil record of a single perfectly preserved creature. Jean Elton's Precis technique renders each curl and coil with controlled precision, so the overall impression is simultaneously organic and architectural: the work of deep time, executed by a steady hand. The dark tonality intensifies the effect, giving the swirling motifs the gravity of something discovered rather than invented.
The Precis_B&W surface treatment is among the most disciplined in the JeanElton studio vocabulary. Working with a strictly limited palette — two tones held in deliberate contrast — the artist applies decoration with exacting control: each mark precisely placed, each passage of tone considered against the whole. The reduction of color shifts the full weight of the composition onto form, line, and contrast, producing surfaces that read simultaneously as drawing and as ceramic art.
The work is fired first to approximately 1800 degrees F, after which any remaining fine alterations are made, and the surface treatment is applied by hand by the artist. A second firing to about 2100 degrees F completes the process, ensuring its durability and artistic integrity.
This piece bears the JeanElton signature on its underside and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity (COA), both of which display its catalogue reference.
