The Story of the Work
Red River is an elemental work whose surface distills landscape into its boldest essentials. A commanding band of deep, earthen red cuts across a matte black field — scarlet meeting basalt, molten flow meeting canyon wall. The gesture is stark and deliberate, dividing the dark ground with the authority of a river carving through ancient rock. The matte finish on both interior and exterior heightens the work's raw presence, absorbing light rather than reflecting it and inviting a tactile intimacy that draws the viewer closer.
This work belongs to the JeanElton TallVase Collection, the studio's most prolific family of forms. Rising vertically from a compact footprint, each TallVase presents its hand-painted surface as a continuous panorama — the decoration wrapping fully around the form, revealing new details with every turn. The gentle taper and organic rim give each piece a quiet individuality within a consistent, commanding silhouette.
The work is fired first to approximately 1800 degrees F, after which any remaining fine alterations are made, and the surface treatment is applied by hand by the artist. A second firing to about 2100 degrees F completes the process, ensuring its durability and artistic integrity.
This piece bears the JeanElton signature on its underside and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity (COA), both of which display its catalogue reference.
