3D Chess for Sealife imagines an underwater realm where the rules of an ancient game meet the strangeness of deep-sea life — a surface populated with checkered forms, circular motifs, and organic shapes that suggest both game pieces and living creatures in equal measure. The palette moves between warm earth tones and cool aquatic blues, creating a surface that feels simultaneously terrestrial and submerged. The composition is dense and playful, each element jostling for position as if mid-game, the outcome perpetually unresolved. The interior opens to a luminous tone that completes the sense of a world lit from an unseen source.

This piece is part of the Prism_Underwater collection, featuring Jean Elton's hand-painted surface technique in which individual brushstrokes of color are applied directly to the ceramic surface. Layered applications build depth and luminosity, each stroke adding translucent intensity to the composition. The result is a surface that appears to glow from within — color not sitting on the clay but emanating from it.

The work is fired first to approximately 1800 degrees F, after which any remaining fine alterations are made, and the surface treatment is applied by hand by the artist. A second firing to about 2100 degrees F completes the process, ensuring its durability and artistic integrity.
