The Story of the Work
Patchwork in Red is a densely composed work whose surface reads like a hand-stitched quilt translated into ceramic form. Angular patches — triangles, chevrons, and irregular trapezoids — are separated by bold black outlines that give each segment its own visual identity. Red commands the composition, ranging from deep crimson to bright vermilion, while flashes of green, ochre, and cobalt emerge within individual patches as unexpected accents. Some segments are filled with tight dot patterns, others with fine parallel lines or small repeating motifs, creating a surface that rewards close study from every angle. The matte finish absorbs light evenly across the exterior, lending the vivid palette a warm, grounded intensity.
This work belongs to the JeanElton TallVase Collection, the studio's most prolific family of forms. Rising vertically from a compact footprint, each TallVase presents its hand-painted surface as a continuous panorama — the decoration wrapping fully around the form, revealing new details with every turn. The gentle taper and organic rim give each piece a quiet individuality within a consistent, commanding silhouette.
The work is fired first to approximately 1800 degrees F, after which any remaining fine alterations are made, and the surface treatment is applied by hand by the artist. A second firing to about 2100 degrees F completes the process, ensuring its durability and artistic integrity.
This piece bears the JeanElton signature on its underside and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity (COA), both of which display its catalogue reference.
