Borealis in Blue

Borealis_in_Blue does not replicate the aurora's blue-green palette — it captures the phenomenon itself: the way polar light moves in bands and curtains across a dark sky, pulsing and reforming. Jean Elton's Prism_Roller technique generates the characteristic sweep of the aurora's motion, the warm tones of gold, orange, and violet suggesting light at the edge of the spectrum where color and energy become indistinguishable. Each piece in this family carries the same atmospheric charge — a surface that appears to be in motion, lit from within.

The Prism_Roller surface treatment takes its name from the studio tool at its heart: a roller applied by hand to generate sweeping fields of color with a characteristic motion and energy. The technique produces surfaces of layered chromatic richness — colors overlapping and interacting in ways that no brush alone could achieve — while the rolling motion leaves traces of its own passage in the finished work. Each piece made with this treatment is unrepeatable: the hand, the pressure, and the moment of application are permanently recorded in the glaze.

The work is fired first to approximately 1800 degrees F, after which any remaining fine alterations are made, and the surface treatment is applied by hand by the artist. A second firing to about 2100 degrees F completes the process, ensuring its durability and artistic integrity.
