A flourish of black-and-white bravado: Marquis is a commanding work in the JeanElton TallVase (TV) Collection, where graphic precision meets sculptural confidence. With its sharply arched lip and undulating silhouette, the piece evokes a theatrical proscenium—an elegant stage poised for dramatic entrance.
The surface treatment features a matte creamy white foundation overlaid with bold, black architectural motifs: a zigzag contour beneath alternating black rectangles creates the illusion of a stylized awning or marquee, drawing the eye in rhythmic procession across its rim. The form is both playful and formal, with a symmetry that defies strict geometry in favor of hand-drawn nuance. The interior, like the accents, is a rich matte black, deepening the work’s visual structure and adding contrast to the lighter façade.
The work is fired first to approximately 1800 degrees F, after which any remaining fine alterations are made, and the surface treatment is applied by hand by the artist. A second firing to about 2100 degrees F completes the process, ensuring its durability and artistic integrity.
